This study examines the performance degradation of the auxiliary boiler on the MV Kaysan in relation to the condition and quality of its Marine Fuel Oil (MFO). Operational issues identified include steam pipe leaks, carbon buildup on burners and nozzles, poor furnace condition, suboptimal feedwater quality, and inadequate boiler maintenance. These conditions caused a drop in steam pressure, preventing the MFO heating process from reaching the required operating temperature. Consequently, fuel viscosity increased, fuel atomization became imperfect, and combustion efficiency declined. The study aims to analyze the factors causing the auxiliary boiler's performance decline, identify the impact on MFO quality, and determine appropriate maintenance and repair measures. A qualitative approach utilizing a case study method was employed. Data were gathered through direct observation, interviews with engine room crew, documentation, and a review of maintenance records. Analysis was conducted through an iterative process of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that fuel quality, the condition of boiler components, the combustion system, boiler air quality, and maintenance practices are all interconnected with boiler performance. Remedial measures include repairing steam pipe leaks, cleaning burners and nozzles, implementing water treatment, and consistently executing the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
