Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the occurrence of main engine rotation abnormalities on the KM Bunga Melati 51, which can affect engine performance and smooth ship operations. under normal operating conditions, the main engine operates at 1.900 rpm with an output power of approximately 950 kw. however, during operation, an abnormal condition was observed when the main engine speed decreased to 1.500 rpm, accompanied by a reduction in engine power to 730 kw. This condition resulted in an increase in fuel consumtion from the normal 175 L/h to 212 L/h. The next objective is to determine the impact of abnormal main engine rotation on engine performance and to describe the handling and prevention efforts that can be implemented so that the main engine rotation returns to normal and stable, thus ensuring that the engine and the operational safety of the ship can be maintained. This employed a qualitative descriptive method using a case study approach on the main engine of KM. Bunga Melati 51. Data were collected through direct observation of the main engine during ship operations, interviews with the chief engineer and engine crew, as well as documentation and the literature review related to the governoor and fuel systems. The collected data were then analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and coclusion drawing technicues to identify the main causes of abnormal engine speed. The resulth of the study indicate that abnormal main engine speed fluctuations (hunting) were caused by several factors, with the primary cause originating from the fuel efficiency. Corrective actions included cleaning and the replacing the fuel filter, servicing or replacing damaged injector nozzles, inspecting and calibrating the governoor speed sensor, and implementing periodic maintenance according to the maintenance schedule to restore stable main engine speed and maintain optimal engine performance.
