The advancement of science and technology in marine transportation facilities is very much needed, as is the large role of marine transportation today. Navigation on merchant ships requires maintenance to maintain operational effectiveness so as not to experience failure (Error) for ideal operation. The purpose of this study is to determine the role of navigation tools for ship safety and even minimize collisions or accidents while sailing, and effective operations in improving safety, as well as handling efforts if failure occurs. In this study, the author uses a descriptive research method to compile this applied scientific paper, namely qualitative research. Qualitative research is research that has a descriptive nature and tends to use analysis. The process and meaning (subject perspective) are more prominent in qualitative research. From the Result the author concludes that each navigation tool is maintained periodically and routinely, training for navigation tool users so that they are competent in operating it, and on board the ship installs a backup navigation tool to overcome the failure of the main device.
